Hey folks,
Just wanted to get your thoughts on Funky Door vs a place like the studio in the Inner Sunset or Mission?
Any experiences or input?
I just came from Yoga Loka in Sac, where it's super family-esque, relatively chill, and the instructors are super personable, encouraging, and understanding- that's more of what I'm looking for, and I've seen some mixed reviews on Yelp for places around here.
Just thought I'd ask the tribe community.
Thanks!

Re: Funky Door vs Other Bikram Yoga Studios...
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 9:09 PMI honestly haven't been to any other Bikram studios, but I have to say Funky Door Berkeley is pretty cool. There's a set of hardcore regulars who all know each other and are like family (I mean, dang, you see each other every day, you know?).... the staff knows a lot of the names of these folks, and names of many others as well.
Disclaimer: I might be biased, because I do worktrade at Funky Door Berkeley (whoo free yoga for 4 hours/week of simple work!), so I get to see bigger chunks of time there, and "behind the scenes".
The thing I like most (aside from it being clean and spacious) is that pretty much everyone there is really friendly. The staff is always having a good time (grooving to music during check-in, etc) and everyone I've ever talked to has been friendly (yoga-doers and staff). -

Re: Funky Door vs Other Bikram Yoga Studios...
Sat, May 17, 2008 - 9:11 PMOh, p.s. in terms of the instructors.... I think a few of their most-awesome instructors aren't teaching as much, or just never when I'm there.... all of the instructors are competent, but some of them don't offer many personalized corrections-- they're just doing the thing and saying the stuff. If I need help, however, they're always willing to help before/after class, and if I request "hey, can you help me during ____ pose?" they'll usually remember. (but otherwise if I don't ask, I get totally ignored 100% of the time. I guess they don't want to bother the kinda-chubby girl who's probably doing her best and doesn't want to be called out, or something. Who knows....) -

Mon, May 19, 2008 - 9:00 AMMission Yoga for sure. I practiced at Funky Door for about 2 years before discovering mission yoga. mission yoga is much more chill, the instructors are very personable and the owners are the best! trust me, goto mission yoga.

Thu, May 22, 2008 - 12:47 AMI honestly don't think there is any "don't want to be bothered" - it's just ... they have to get to know you and whether you like a lot of in class correction, etc. Or, if they know you are doing your best there is really no point in saying a correction as long as they can tell you are pushing in the right form.
We have lost a lot of wonderful instructors in a short time but it will balance out as we get to know the new ones and they us ;~) -

I dunno about that. Some teachers are constantly correcting/helping people, even if it's "blue shorts in the corner, lock your leg!" to someone whose name they don't know. Others don't correct anyone. I guess it's just personal teacher preference. Honestly, I don't mind, as I can hear the corrections of others and apply it to me...and if I have specific questions I can ask afterwards...but it's nice to know that someone's looking out for me, you know? -

Mon, May 26, 2008 - 2:09 PMThanks everyone!
I'm just biding my time to start up again- it's tough when I am out on the river to justify beginning the 30 days for 30 dollars...
:)
But soon...
Home right now with a neck injury. Blech.

If you are ever in Humboldt County - I highly recommend Sacred Palace. (5th & F Street, Eureka)
We get it HOT in there!
Paul and Naveena are awesome teachers. Both are different style in their own ways.
All Happy Yogi smiles up in Humboldt.
