Have most of you given up alcoholic beverages?
Because of yoga? or do you find no reason to not drink because of yoga?

Re: drinking and bikram
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 1:01 PMI stopped drinking alcohol a couple months before I started yoga...and there were a few times where I had the craving but because I knew I'd be in the hot room the next day I decided not to drink. I was just having a conversation with someone the other day about this subject, and I haven't even had a craving for it in probably 6 months. (I work in a bar-so thats saying something). It's funny, because when I first stopped I'd have the urge, like oh that would taste good...now the smell even grosses me out. There was one day, about 6 months into my practice where I had a couple drinks the night before--and it just made me feel irritable and icky--the next day in my practice my balance was all off and I just saw how it didn't benefit me. I think I've kicked the habit, which is good...yoga and the hot room definately helped me do it.

Re: drinking and bikram
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 3:18 PMI don't drink alcohol (or at least very rarely). I heard people talk about getting a drink after class before and that seems crazy - more for the dehydration factor than anything else. I'd like to give up coffee for this reason (and other reasons too).
I've done other *things* (I don't want elaborate) before class and I've thrown up. Bikram doesn't go well with toxins. I imagine that alcohol would fit in that catergory -

Re: drinking and bikram
Sun, April 8, 2007 - 8:22 PMSince practicing Bikram, initially I almost immediately stopped drinking coffee, tea and alcohol. After a year now, I don't drink ANY coffee at all. This is pretty remarkable because I was something of a real coffee addict. I don't drink caffeinated teas. I don't seem to need that caffeine boost that I used to be addicted to. I do drink non-caffeinated medicinal teas.
I NEVER drink alcohol before a class. That's just crazy. I will sometimes have a drink a few hours afterwards, but not right away. When I first started doing Bikram, alcohol tasted repugnant to me. I think my body has acclimatized somewhat to the hot yoga, and I can tolerate alcohol now in moderation. I really have no desire to get intoxicated from alcohol though.
An interesting question is whether it makes any sense to try to detox a hangover with hot yoga. I've never tried that. I don't know if it would work or not. It seems like you wouldn't have the energy or concentration to be able to do anything. I think alcohol intoxication is dehydrating, so it would probably be dangerous to go into a Bikram session in that condition.
