Pulled a muscle in my back. ... advice

topic posted Sat, February 11, 2006 - 7:32 AM by  CinemaGirl
Hi folks. I am so terribly in love with Bikram Yoga. It's changing me entirely. BUT..
yesterday in class I pulled a muscle in the lower back...right behind the coccyx bone (kind of in the right butt/ lower back area) doing the final twisting asana.

I'm fine when i sit, and semi-ok when I walk.
But how long should I wait before doing class again? I think the heat in the room will help. I wont do the things that deal with the back...most of the floor exercises..

But if i go a week without yoga I feel lost.
advice?
thanks,
alex

Are you sure you pulled a muscle? From where you say the pain is, it could be sciatica. Half-pigeon will help release the piriformus muscle in the hip that sometimes spasms and presses against the sciatic nerve.

If it's really a pulled muscle, alternate ice and heat. Personally, I would keep going to yoga and sit out any pose that causes pain.

yes...thanks. i think i will go back either tomorrow or monday and just sit out anything that feels wrong.

It's definitely a pull. there was a specific moment where I knew something wrong had happened....

        Hi there

I know it was over two years ago that you posted this topic but I have just had the same issue yesterday at yoga where i pulled my upper back and neck muscles, and its blimin sore! I googled the sentence "pulled back muscle from bikram yoga" and your blog came up! Anyway I also need yoga in my daily life but feel nervous at going back so soon after hurting my back...Are you still with this website and if so are you able to tell me two years on, if you went back straight away or waited and whats your advice...much appreciated! Jess

Goldie- also you may want to talk to one of the instructors about it. Most studios have some pretty keen yogis that will help provide some suggestions for how to listen and heal your body without hurting it further.

          best wishes... namaste

            Hey there.
Well...two years later and I'm no longer doing Bikram really.
The great instructors at the studio told me to just take it easy and i spent a few weeks really just sitting a lot in the warm room.

Truth is, I wound up getting very, very sick and we couldnt figure out what was wrong...long story short I had a very large tumor on my pancreas that was just removed about 4 months ago and I'm still sort of recovering with getting my remaining organ (no spleen either) to try and kick in.

I hope to go back soon, but don't really know.
I think Bikram is rougher on the body that people think. You can't always work through stuff. I had a great surgeon who knew about bikram and said that absolutely no way should I attempt for a while.

            good luck with your back!
