30-day challenge

The yoga community that I am a part of is working in partnership with a medical research group as well as a restaurant that specializes in raw food dishes (organic/vegan) to see what the affects of daily bikram and a raw diet will have on the body. We are currently on day 4. There are 25 or so of us in the actual study. Many of the members are coming to do yoga daily or more than what they had previously to support us and one another.

So far we have been going through a pretty heavy detoxification. Symptoms in the group include headaches, nauseousness, vomiting, diarrhea, insomnia, cloudiness. Mine feels like its getting better when I avoid eating, but one can only do that for so long, right? ;)

Anyone else have experiences of doing any type of cleanse while continuing in your yoga practice? Any advice or suggestions?

I did the Master Cleanse while continuing my yoga practice, last year I think.... after day 3 or so, I COULD NOT complete a Bikram class. I got extremely lightheaded, and any posture in which you'd be head-down, I'd almost pass out.

I think you need lots of real fuel for your body to be doing Bikram.

Good luck though! If it doesn't kill you, it'll make you stronger...right?

Thank you for the insight. My body is rejecting the raw food. I'm good with organic/vegan, but I think we have too many greens and nuts. I've struggled in yoga class, but I've muddled my way through at least one set of the poses/postures that I got dizzy with.

I really, really want to make my way through the rest of this month. My heart tells me that I need to slow the pace of my "regular" life to accommodate this challenge and pour most of my energy toward this if I am to make it through.

Anyone have a raw, organic, vegan suggestion for nauseousness?

Any and all of those symptoms can just be from going raw if you have been on an unhealthy diet and if you are off of coffee the coaffeine detox causes severe headaches. i did the master cleanse for five days and practiced a couple of times. it was pretty difficult. i was down on the mat alot cause I would get dizzy. The rest of the group who were cleansing did not have trouble with the practice like I did. I have freinds who would master cleanse for two weeks straight and practice every day and they LOVED it. Go figure.

Thanks for the feedback. I'm on day 5 and I am beginning to feel human again. What's helpful is knowing that so many people in my yoga community are participating in this challenge. We had one class where half of us had to sit down because of dizziness and/or nauseousness.

Before this, I was pretty healthy in what I ate. I can't drink a lot of caffeine in general, so I missed the headaches. Unfortunately, I had the weekend before this challenge with 5 girlfriends in SF where we ate terribly and had one night of a few too many cocktails. Overall, according to the doctor's tests, the affects were minimal. As for how this primed me for this challenge, I'm sure it made it more difficult.

The good news is that I think I'm over the first hump. My energy is beginning to rise up. I'm loving the daily yoga. I think it was the food adjustment that made it really tough. I'll try the ginger. That sounds yummy!

Please keep us posted! I'm interested to hear how it goes. Good luck! You're braver than I.

I will pop on every so often for an update. If you want to follow my daily progress and my general ramblings, I'm keeping a weblog through my vanity tribe:

Now that I'm at day 6, things are sooooooooooooooo much better. My body is reshaping itself and trimming down, my stomach is starting to cooperate a bit better, and my clarity, energy, and outlook are "beyond their flexibility." hehe...

My group has its first support meeting tomorrow. I'll get to hear how everyone else is doing. Hopefully they are coming out of the detox, too. Thanks for the words of support. See you all on the mat!! ;)

Well, you're over the hump. We need an update. How are you doing on your 30-day challenge?

I feel AMAZING! The first week was really difficult. My body went into purge mode from the food and the yoga.

Here's where I am at now...

I feel more centered, alive, and I am healing the hurts of my body, of life, and my home. I can feel this transformation happening in ways that has a very steady and balanced momentum. Those in the challenge with me have all had similar experiences. Our eyes are sparkling with life and our bodies are buzzing with energy.

I have been truly honored and blessed by this experience and I'm on day 17!!

If you have never tried doing Bikram Yoga daily for a number of days, I recommend that you try it. My ego has benefitted from the constant supervision of my postures, my body from the cleansing, and my mind and heart from the acceptance and accomplishment of making it this far.

No matter how often or how many, I wish you the best on the mat. I'll be back at the end of the 30 days with a full report.

So, it looks like this is going to stretch to a 31-day challenge. I think the person that put this together set it up that way to squeak one more day out of something she really believes in... which is actually pretty cool. Wednesday will be my last day on the challenge.

This morning all of the people participating in the diet/daily bikram yoga challenge did a silent class. If you've never done one of these, I highly recommend that you check one out- in a community that you've gotten to know. During these past few weeks I've gotten to know many of the people that were doing this cleanse and when we were all together in the studio- with no one else present, the energy and connection was tangible. Not once did the instructor have to say, "change," to have us move from one posture to another. We syncronized and it was amazing.

As I come out of the challenge later this week, I'll be preparing food for a long weekend camping trip and trying to navigate making my own meals again, so now's a good time for reflection.

This has been difficult. It has brought up a lot of toxins- literal toxins from my body and those stored in my emotions. This has happened to all of us doing the challenge. The benefit of the daily yoga and raw/vegan/organic diet has been that I feel more alive, aware, and centered.

A documentary is being made of our experience. We have been filmed in class and in our support groups. The film makers anticipate the editing to be done in enough time for submission to the Portland Film Festival (Portland, OR). The class of challengers have asked to be able to screen the documentary before it is release publicly, so we'll see how they do. I can't even imagine how difficult it will be to express in that medium what our journeys have been like, but I'll be excited to see what they come up with.

As for me, I feel like my journey has just begun. I feel like I am back to being the real me and I am ready to experience and create the best of what life has to offer.

My studio did a private "silent" class, by invitation only. The occasion was to celebrate the passing of one of our studio's "regulars." He had been ill for some time and the Bikram Yoga kept him alive. It worked as you describe -- everyone moving in synchronous union, changing automatically. It was very special, very intense and very moving. (It was a double for me, as I had just completed the regular 90 minute class, so I was already in a somewhat altered state of reality.) I highly recommend the experience.

i love silent classes. Every one sort of entters the "the field" for alack of better term and we all sort of become one synchronized body.
